Our Story

It’s always good to stop and remember the wonderful things God has done and then use it as an encouragement of what is yet to come. Eastside Baptist Church (Eastside) has been sitting on Lower Roswell Road for over 52 years and has a rich history of a faithful God working through faithful people.

In June of 1961, 170 people celebrated the first Sunday of Eastside Baptist Chapel, a mission church of Roswell Street Baptist. These people felt God’s calling to start a church plant on the other side of the “Four-Lane” (Hwy. 41). Rev. Ken Ellison was the first Pastor and quickly led in the construction of a new building.

In 1967, when the Ellison’s left to be missionaries in Indonesia, Rev. Arnall Richardson was chosen to lead Eastside. With the growth of Lockheed many new families were moving into the area and into our church requiring a new Educational wing to be added. Eastside suffered a great loss when Pastor Richardson died in a local plane crash; but, in adversity there is unity and the church continued to grow.

In 1971, Rev. Justis Garrett was the interim Pastor when Eastside celebrated our tenth anniversary with a membership of over 1200 people. Excited Eastside became a fitting motto.

Things didn’t slow down when Rev. Clark Hutchinson became Eastside’s fourth Pastor in 1973. The church was literally bursting at the seams and a new auditorium, music suite and educational space was built. Families from all over the country moved into booming Atlanta. Cobb County and Eastside experienced great growth.

In 1985, God prompted several Eastside families to start Eastside Christian School. Over the years our highly respected school has allowed thousands of children to receive an outstanding education based on the foundation of the Bible.

God led Eastside to invest in new and creative areas of ministry in the building of the Christian Activities Center (CAC). This has been a great addition to families not only at Eastside but in the community. Today you can work-out, walk the track, take Zumba and Body Sculpting classes, participate in a pick-up game of basketball or cheer for your child in an Upward Sport.

Thirty years after its beginning Eastside’s membership grew to over 5500 people. In 1993, Dr. Gerald Harris stepped in to provide leadership in multiple services and the foundational concept for a new Student Center was underway. Reaching youth in our community was given high priority.

Recently Eastside has undergone a state-of-the-art renovation making our facilities friendlier for generations to come. We have the technical capabilities to produce great events for the church as well as the community. In 2004, Dr. David Chauncey became Eastside’s Lead Pastor. Under his leadership this church has continued to effectively reach the people in our community as well as having a concentrated focus on world missions, particularly in Africa and Eastern Europe.

As you can see, Eastside has a wonderful history but we believe an even greater future. The world is at our doorsteps as we consider our ever growing multi-cultural community. New challenges and opportunities are before us and we are excited to follow God’s leadership in meeting them.
